Cómpeta
Idyllic Cómpeta, the ‘pearl of Axarquia’, a fine example of a Spanish whitewashed village. It’s labyrinth of steep streets, cobbled alleyways and traditional houses nestled on the hillside. The picturesque Andalusian village is cloaked by mountains and with incredible views down towards the med.
Each year on the 15th of August the village hosts a fun fiesta called Noche del vino (Night of the wine) packed full of colour, culture and traditions. Spain knows how to do a good fiesta. It was a great opportunity for our little tribe to experience flamenco, dancing, art, grapes crushed under foot and free local wine(sweet, brown wine from the muscatel grape) and traditional food (migas)!

Looks fantastic. It’s great that SPain still holds on to these traditions. Benefits of being a reasonably warm country I guess. How wonderful for you to be a part of it. #MySUndayPhoto

Thanks for the reply, the 15th of August has long been an important date for the village as they pay homage to their patron saint, regardless of what day it falls on (Monday this year) Great to be a part of the fiesta atmosphere there.

It’s one of our favorite Spanish villages, the road winds up from the coast to Competa at approx 700m above sea level which makes for some great views. Noche Del Vino has a nice vibe.

Well worth a visit, a good base for the Axarquia area. The Noche del Vino morning activities take place in the plaza of the harvest, the evening activities in the main village plaza ‘Almijara’ next to a sixteenth century church.
