Mezquita de Córdoba
The Mezquita de Córdoba, or the Mosque Cathedral of Córdoba, Spain is a magical place. A national monument, world heritage site and a site of outstanding universal value. A great example of moorish architecture and simply a breathtaking building.
If you are an early bird (not difficult with two small children) and arrive from 08.30-09.30am you are allowed into the Mezquita for free.
The Mezquita de Córdoba began as a small Christian Visigoth basilica, When the Muslims conquered Spain in 711 the church was shared by both religions for over 70 years until the site was rebuilt into the Grand Mosque of Córdoba.
When Córdoba was again ruled by Christians in 1236, the Mezquita de Córdoba reinvented itself, as a small renaissance catholic church was built in the centre of the site. A complete juxtaposition of architectural styles and religions that somehow coexist and work together in perfect harmony.
We are visiting Córdoba for Paul’s birthday, what an amazing place to celebrate! New blog post all about the city of Córdoba to follow soon.
What a beautiful place to visit – such wonderful architecture and I love the light shining through the window in the last shot.
